The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Discussions Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
