Early Saturday, accounts surfaced of significant blasts shaking Tehran, following claims from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preventative strike.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were audible in the city on Saturday. Correspondingly, two plumes of dense smoke were seen billowing over the centre and east of the city.
“The type of these blasts indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet stated, without immediately provide further details.
Background: Escalating Strains and Prior Developments
This event takes place against a background of sharply increased strains in the region. Major events preceding this attack involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant build-up of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent talks between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with indications of further talks scheduled.
- Public Statements: Before the attack, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered warnings regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or confront serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had charged the United States of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. Officials rejected assertions about weapons development and casualty figures as unfounded.
The situation is fast-moving, with additional reports anticipated as the situation develops.
