India's capital Rises to Toxic Pollution Following Festival of Lights
Tuesday brought residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with exposed to dangerously toxic air that fell into the "severe" level.
Extremely High Air Quality Levels
Several parts of the capital recorded an air quality index exceeding 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the healthy level recommended by the World Health Organization.
Particular areas, levels of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of 1800, amounting to 15-20x above safe levels.
Firecracker Prohibition and New Developments
Beginning in 2020, authorities had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their major role to the hazardous pollution that engulfs the metropolis as colder weather begins.
Yet recently, the current local administration petitioned the judicial authority to seek a relaxation of the prohibition.
The suggestion was allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically criticized by environmentalists as being only approximately one-third lower impact – as a balance between "heritage and environment".
Judicial Verdict and Reality
Despite concerns of environmental and health advocates, judicial authorities agreed to the appeal, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during specific hours throughout the celebrations.
Throughout the festival evening, there was extensive disregard of the designated hours across the capital, with minimal regulation regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener type.
Many recording stations throughout Delhi recorded air quality peaking around late evening to the most severe measurements observed during Diwali in at least recent memory.
Regional Implications
Extensive ignition of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also triggered a controversy with adjacent Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab province partly blaming worsening pollution levels in the city of Lahore on pollutants traveling from across the border following the festivities.
Chronic Pollution Problem
The dangerously high readings of pollution in the capital have continued as a major issue for more than 15 years, with the condition gradually deteriorating.
Near Diwali, the concentration of dangerous particulate matter in the atmosphere has been observed to spike to 70% higher the peak readings ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was previously regarded as the globally most contaminated urban center.
Diverse Pollution Contributors
This crisis in the capital is caused by a mix of multiple factors including transportation pollution, dust, development work, rubbish burning and haze from agricultural fires in neighbouring regions of neighboring agricultural zones.
Throughout these areas, rural residents routinely burn crop residue to clear them quickly, generating hazardous pollution that remains stagnant over the capital as cooler air arrives.
Medical and Economic Consequences
Both financial and medical consequences on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants residing in the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to multiple research.
The contaminated air leads to increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and respiratory disorders, and can potentially cause malignancies.
The pollution is projected to be accounting for ten thousand early fatalities each year in the capital.
