The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments were revealed.

This encompassed attempting to break his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the possibility of Bolsonaro's move to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a background of planning to request asylum through a consular facility", a statement said.

The court filing emphasizes that the US embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is located around 13km from his dwelling.

Global Responses

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist US President Donald Trump, leading him to enact a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being held in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will experience a custody hearing on the next day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be allowed to leave his home for medical care, saying he needed ongoing care for lung conditions and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

He was determined responsible of heading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which encompassed plans to assassinate Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was prevented because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. His successor was inaugurated without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, thousands of his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, the capital city.

The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been incited by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the time, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The former president called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the next presidential race.
