Are You Able to Solve This? The Overlooked Netherlands Creation That Shaped the Contemporary Globe
There are numerous contenders for the designation as “world’s most significant innovation.” The circular axle. The printing press. The combustion motor.
According to a new book, however, that honor belongs to the mechanised timber mill invented through Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.
“Before automated sawing, constructing a modest trading ship required around 10 lumberjacks laboring over three months,” writes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-driven sawmills, the same quantity of cut lumber might be produced in less than seven days.”
Thanks to this speedy mechanical cutter, which turned timber into planks with almost no human effort, Dutch builders could build ships faster compared to any other nation, an advantage that sparked one hundred years of Netherlands naval, economic and artistic dominance across the continent and the globe.
The Original Genuine Manufacturing Device
Corneliszoon’s sawmill, argues Dávila, was “humanity’s initial true factory apparatus.” A wind turbine rotated a wheel. A single part transformed its circular movement into up-and-down motion for the saw. A separate mechanism changed the spinning motion into a sideway’s movement feeding the log to the blade. A ratchet system moved the log ahead a measured step each stroke.
“Every component was simple by itself. The Dutchman’s genius lay in how to combine them in order that the machine acted within a precisely synchronized order, sawing with each downward motion while advancing with each return stroke. This constituted an astonishingly clever use of fundamental components.”
